Preventative Care
Preventive dentistry is the way to help keep your mouth healthy, and means you need to have less dental treatment in the future therefore saving time and stress. The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease. Preventative care is always better than treatment and so, by attending the dentist for regular check-ups the more chance people hold to have a happy and healthy smile. Working with your dentist at Maroubra Dental Avenue, we can help prevent the need for treatment to avoid the traditional road of fillings and extractions. Working out a treatment option to get your mouth to ‘good conditions’ and then a maintenance plan to keep it that way is a safeguard against more aggressive treatments in the future.
There are a number of things you can do to look after your oral health including routine dental check-ups, x rays, mouth guards, cleaning and of course, excellent oral health at home with brushing twice a day and flossing.
Keeping your teeth in good condition is the best (and cheapest) way to prevent unnecessary trips to the dentist for treatments that may otherwise have been avoided such as cavities resulting from decay. Whilst some things cannot be avoided, we suggest starting at home with your preventative care.
Simple changes such as a diet low in sugar, quitting smoking and minimising alcoholic drinks will also help. Cutting down on sugar in food and drinks is a simple change in diet which can decrease plaque build-up which leads to decay and cavities. Smoking can cause your teeth to lose their natural colour by nicotine staining and can lead to tooth loss, mouth cancer, and make gum disease worse. Alcoholic drinks can also lead to poor dental health as they have a high sugar content, and some mixed drinks may contain acids which lead to decay and erosion if you drink them often.
Simple changes like chewing sugar free gum between meals, using a straw if you decide to have fizzy or sugary drinks and of course brushing and flossing twice a day also help to prevent the onset of dental and gum disease and will hold you a better position in the future.
